Help from RealNetwork

If you have trouble getting RealPlayer to work on your system, the most comprehensive source for help information is the RealNetworks site. If the player software experiences an error, it is usually pretty good at providing a description of the error, and often presents a link to specific help information at the RealNetworks site. In addition, the RealNetwork site has a Technical Support and Customer Service area, where you should be able to find answers to your questions.

Troubleshooting

A first step in any trouble-shooting is to restart the computer. If the computer still has trouble after a restart, consider some possible solutions below.

Problem: Network Congestion, Buffering...
The audio/video stops, and the player displays this message. If it happens only occasionally, it may simply be that network traffic is too heavy at the moment. Some interruptions are normal, as we are dependent on all parts of the Internet that connect you to us. Any kind of failure or degradation that results in "lost packets" will usually be experienced as stuttering, dropouts or long periods of rebuffering. The effects can usually be minimized by making some adjustments to the player settings.

In the main menu, select

  • Preferences and then
  • Transport.

Under Network Transport

  • select Use specified transports
  • select RTSP Transport Settings
  • select Use TCP to Connect to Server
  • uncheck Attempt to use Multicast...
  • leave checked Attempt to use UDP...
  • leave checked Attempt to use TCP...
Click on OK until you get back to the player screen.

This will usually help somewhat. If it doesn't make a large improvement...

  • uncheck Attempt to use UDP...

If Network Congestion/Buffering remains a problem, it's likely that your modem speed and/or your internet service provider's connection speed are not quite sufficient to handle the streamed media signal. RealNetworks suggests contacting your ISP if you experience this persistently. Another possibility is that the software "driver" for your sound card needs updating. If you suspect this may be the case, visit the website of the maker of your sound card to see if an updated driver is available.

Problem: Firewall Issues Preventing Reception of Content
Try setting Network Transports to "http only." This can be done under Tools, Preferences, Connection/Network transports, Manually Configure Connection Settings: RTSP Settings,

In the main menu, select

  • Preferences and then
  • Connection.

Under Connection

  • select Manually Configure Connection Settings
for RTSP Settings
  • uncheck - the first 3 items
  • check Attempt to use http for all content
for PNA Settings
  • uncheck - the first 3 items
  • check Attempt to use http for all content
Restart RealPlayer.
